Braddock Down, battle of, 1643. Parliament and the king were still contending for local supremacy in the south-west in the early days of 1643. At Braddock Down, near Liskeard, on 19 January 1643, Sir Ralph Hopton defeated a parliamentary force, taking 1,250 men and all their guns.
