Arcot, siege of, 1751. Robert Clive, a young captain in the army of the East India Company, while attempting to relieve Mahomet Ali in Trichinopoly, was besieged in Arcot by a vastly superior French and Indian force. He defended it for fifty days until help came. It was Clive's first major victory and a check to French progress in the Carnatic.
