Kandy
Kandy City in Sri Lanka. Former capital of the ancient kings of Ceylon, it was occupied by the Portuguese and the Dutch before being captured by the British in 1815. The city is a market centre for a region producing tea, rice, rubber and cacao. The chief industry is tourism. Pop. (2001) 156,923.
