Van Dyck, Sir Anthony (1599–1641) Flemish portrait and religious painter. Van Dyck worked in Rubens' studio before travelling abroad. His portraits of the aristocracy, such as Marchesa Elena Grimaldi (c.1625), were widely copied. In 1632, Van Dyck was invited to England by Charles I, who made him court painter and a knight. The elegance and sophistication of his depictions of the English aristocracy was the model for portraiture until John Singer Sargent.
