Babi faith (Babism) Muslim religious sect founded (1844) in Persia (Iran) by Sayyid Ali Muhammad, the self-proclaimed prophet Bab (Arabic, ‘gate’). Drawing on the teachings of existing branches of Islam, Babists believed in the imminent coming of the Promised One. In 1848 they declared secession from Islam, but their rebellion against the new Shah of Iran was crushed and their founder executed in 1850. See also Baha'i
