Highway Worker Memorial Scholarship Program (Undergraduate/Scholarship)

Purpose: To provide financial assistance to help the children or legally adopted children of highway workers killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty to pursue post-highschool education. Focus: General studies. Qualif.: Applicants must be sons, daughters or legally adopted children of highway workers who died or became permanently disabled in roadway construction zone accidents and their parents have been employed by a transportation construction firm or a transportation public agency at the time of his or her death or disabling injury. Criteria: Candidates are evaluated on the basis of their submitted application materials.

Funds Avail.: $2000. Number Awarded: 1. To Apply: Candidates must submit completed and signed award application form; proof of parent's death in line of duty; if parent is permanently disabled, must submit documentation that shows disability work-related; proof of guardianship if not living with surviving parent; an official copy of transcript and grade report from the school currently attended or most recently attended; a brief, typewritten statement explaining reasons for wanting to continue education accompanied by recent photo; completed and signed “Free Application for Federal Student Aid” (FAFSA) forms for the current year; federal tax return copy; copy of acceptance letter from the college, university, technical school where the applicants plan to attend; and two letters of recommendation from teachers in support of their application. Deadline: February 29.
