Mapilton, Thomas
Mapilton, Thomas (fl. 1408–d. 1438). English master-mason. He built the cloisters at Durham Cathedral (1408–16), and from 1416 to 1418 was employed at Westminster Abbey and the Tower of London. In 1420 he may have been in Florence, acting as one of the consultants for the design of the dome of the Cathedral there, and in 1421 was promoted to the office of King's Master-Mason in London. He designed the south-west tower of Canterbury Cathedral (1423–34), and may have been responsible for the Lollards' Tower at Lambeth Palace, London (begun 1434). He built the Church of St Stephen, Walbrook, London (1429–39—replaced by Wren's church after the Great Fire of 1666). He gave advice at the great Abbey of Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk (1429–30—destroyed), and may have been involved in the early planning of St Bernard's (now St John's) and All Souls Colleges, Oxford, just before his death.
