Gurlitt, Cornelius
Gurlitt, Cornelius (1850–1938). German architect and architectural historian. He wrote nearly 100 books and many more articles, but he is remembered as the first effective champion of Baroque art and architecture which, in C19, had been out of favour. Rejecting the language of Schinkel and his followers, he favoured Semper, Wallot, and others who turned to a richer, less restrained architecture. His magnum opus was the influential Geschichte des Barockstiles, des Rococo und des Klassizismus (History of the Baroque, Rococo, and Classical Styles—published in Stuttgart in 1887–9).
