meniscectomy (men-i-sek-tŏmi) n. surgical removal of a cartilage (meniscus) in the knee. This is carried out when the meniscus has been torn or is diseased and is causing pain, swelling, locking, or other symptoms. The operation is routinely performed through an arthroscope.
