arterial blood gases (ABGs) (ar-teer-iăl) pl. n. gases present in arterial blood, normally including oxygen, carbon dioxide, and nitrogen. Measurements of the partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide, together with the blood's pH, give information on the oxygen saturation of the haemoglobin and the acid-base state of the blood, which is relevant in critical care situations and for those requiring respiratory support.
