SIDELIGHTS:

Art gallery director, catalogue author, and essayist Catherine Lampert has spent much of her career organizing art exhibits in both the United States and England, where she has spent the majority of her career. She is also the author of numerous essays, most of which have appeared in catalogues produced for various exhibits. In the catalogue Rodin: Sculpture & Drawings, developed for an exhibit at the Hayward Gallery in London, Lampert's essays focus on the cross-influences of Rodin's drawings and sculptures and include data on 270 entries in the show. In Burlington Magazine, Philip-Ward Jackson noted that "Lampert presents in the catalogue convincing parallels with the drawings of Gericault." Writing in Library Journal, Gloria K. Rensch called the catalogue "required reading for Rodin specialists." Choice contributor P. N. Holder noted that Lampert "treats the creative impulses of the artist's work in a thorough and scholarly manner."

Lampert has also helped organize exhibitions and catalogues on Indian paintings and sculptures, Henri Matisse, John Walker, and Francisco Toledo. Her catalogue for figurative painter Lucian Freud focused largely on recent portraits by the artist, many of which had never been reproduced before. In the catalogue Frank Auerbach: Paintings and Drawings, 1954-2001, written with Norman Rosenthal and Isabel Carlisle, Lampert addresses in her essay the artist's relations with his various sitters. Writing in the Times Literary Supplement, Michael Pedro noted that Lampert has written "a remarkable essay in which she incorporates interviews with his main subjects and describes her own experience as one of them."
