Sidelights

Denise Grady began work as a writer and editor in the science and medical news field after earning her undergraduate degree in biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook. After returning to school to obtain her graduate degree in English, she went on to write for a number of publications both as a staff writer and a freelancer, contributing to periodicals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Discover, Scientific American, Time, Vogue, Reader's Digest, American Health, Parenting, and Self. For ten years, Grady was a freelance writer for the science section of the New York Times and then joined the newspaper as a staff reporter in 1998.

As part of the New York Times staff, Grady has participated in the publication of general books on health, such as The New York Times Book of Women's Health: The Latest on Feeling Fit, Eating Right, and Staying Well, for which she served as editor, and The New York Times Guide to Alternative Health: A Consumer Reference, to which she contributed.

Grady has also written Deadly Invaders: Virus Outbreaks around the World, from Marburg Fever to Avian Flu, a book for children and young adults that was based on her 2005 trip to Angola to report on an outbreak of Marburg fever. Carolyn Phelan, reviewing the work for Booklist, called Deadly Invaders "a useful and quite readable source of information on viral diseases that have made headlines." A contributor for Kirkus Reviews predicted that Grady's book will "leave readers profoundly affected by … the dangers of these often-unpredictable potential pandemics."
