Wiedebein, Gottlob
Wiedebein, Gottlob, German organist, conductor, and composer; b. Eilenstadt, July 27,1779; d. Braunschweig, April 17,1854. After studying in Braunschweig with his uncle and J. Schwanenberger, he was active as a teacher until being made principal conductor of the court orch. (1816) and opera (1818); he was compelled by ill health to give up his posts in 1832. He enjoyed a great reputation; Schumann sought his advice. He wrote some excellent lieder. Among his other works are an overture, the oratorio Die Befreiung Deutschlands (c. 1822), various cantatas and motets, piano pieces, and organ music.
