Vlijmen Jan van

Vlijmen, Jan van, Dutch composer, music educator, and administrator; b. Rotterdam, Oct. 11, 1935. He received training in piano and organ at the Utrecht Cons., where he later studied composition with Kees van Baaren. From 1961 to 1965 he was director of the Amersfoort Music School, and then was a lecturer in theory at the Utrecht Cons, from 1965 to 1967. In 1967 he became deputy director and in 1971 director of the Royal Cons, of Music at The Hague. From 1985 to 1988 he was general manager of the Netherlands Opera in Amsterdam. In 1991 he was director of the Holland Festival.
