Tizol, Juan (Vincente Martinez)
Tizol, Juan (Vincente Martinez), jazz valve trombonist, long associated with Duke Ellington, composer; b. San Juan, P.R., Jan. 22, 1900; d. Inglewood, Calif., April 23, 1984. He came to the U.S.A. in 1920 with the Marie Lucas Orch., and eventually joined Duke Ellington from August 1929 until April 1944 (except for absences through illness), then Harry James from April 1944 until March 1951 when he rejoined Ellington. Left in late 1953 and worked with Harry James throughout remainder of 1950s, temporary return to Duke Ellington in spring of 1960. Lived in Los Angeles before moving to Las Vegas. After 1961, he retired from performing, although remained active in the musicians7 union. Several of his famous compositions (including “Perdido” and “Caravan”) were recorded originally by Duke Ellington.
