Schwertsik, Kurt (b Vienna, 1935). Austrian composer. Played hn. in Lower Austrian Tonkünstler Orch. 1955–9, 1962–8. With Cerha, founded Viennese new mus. ens., Die Reihe, 1958. Studied with Stockhausen in Cologne and Darmstadt 1959–62 and with Kagel and Cage in 1962. In 1965 pub. manifesto attacking aspects of post–1945 avant-garde. Played 2nd hn. in Vienna SO 1968. Taught comp. at Vienna Cons. from 1979. Wrote operas, ballets, orch. works, chamber mus., and many songs and song-cycles.
