Rushton, Julian (Gordon)
Rushton, Julian (Gordon) , English musicologist; b. Cambridge, May 22, 1941. He studied at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London (1959–60), Trinity Coll., Cambridge (B.A., 1963; B.M., 1965; M.A., 1967), and at Magdalen Coll., Oxford (Ph.D., 1969, with the diss. Music and Drama at the Académie Royale de Musique, Paris, 1774–1789). He was a lecturer at the Univ. of East Anglia (1968–74) and at the Univ. of Cambridge (1974–81). In 1982 he became West Riding Prof. of Music at the Univ. of Leeds. In 1979 he became a member of the editorial committee of Musica Britannica, serving as chairman from 1993. In 1991 he became general ed. of the Cambridge Music Handbooks series. From 1994 to 1999 he was president of the Royal Musical Assn. Rushton has contributed articles to various scholarly and reference books, as well as to learned journals.
