Pixis, Friedrich Wilhelm

Pixis, Friedrich Wilhelm , German violinist, conductor, teacher, and composer, brother of Johann Peter Pixis; b. Mannheim, March 12, 1785; d. Prague, Oct. 20, 1842. He studied with his father in Mannheim. After further training from Ignaz Fränzi, he made a concert tour with his brother in 1796. While in Hamburg in 1798, he received additional instruction from Viotti. Following tours in Poland, Russia, and Denmark, he returned to Mannheim and was a member of the electoral chapel orch. until 1806. After completing his studies with Albrechtberger in Vienna, he settled in Prague, where he became a prof. at the Cons. and conductor of the theater orch. in 1810. Among his students were R. Dreyschock and Kalliwoda. He composed a Violin Concerto, Variations on War’s vielleicht um eins for Violin and Orch., and a Violin Sonata.
