Neway, Patricia
Neway, Patricia, American soprano; b. N.Y., Sept. 30, 1919. She was educated at Notre Dame Coll. for women; received vocal instruction from Morris Gesell, who later became her husband. She made her stage debut as Fiordiligi at the Chautauqua Festival in 1946. After several appearances in minor roles, she achieved her first significant success as Magda Sorel in Menotti’s opera The Consul (Philadelphia, March 1, 1950); created the role of the Mother in another Menotti opera, Maria Golovin, at the Brussels World’s Fair (Aug. 20, 1958). Her repertoire also included parts in operas by Berg and Britten.
