Narváez, Luis de

Narváez, Luis de, Spanish vihuelist and composer who flourished from 1530 to 1550. He was a native of Granada. He served as music teacher to the children in the chapel of Prince Philip (later Philip II), and had the opportunity to travel throughout northern Europe. He publ. Los seys libros del Delphin de música de cifra -para tarier vïhuela (Valladolid, 1538; in tablature), containing the earliest examples of variation form and the use of symbols for tempo indications in Spain; it was reprinted in modern notation by E. Pujol in Monumentos de la Música Espanola (Vol. 3, Barcelona, 1945) and G. Tar-ragó (Madrid, 1971).
