Loewe, Sophie (Johanna)
Loewe, Sophie (Johanna), German soprano; b. Oldenburg, March 24, 1815; d. Budapest, Nov. 28,1866. She studied in Vienna with Ciccimarra and in Milan with Lamperti, making her debut as Elisabetta in Otto mesi in due ore at Vienna’s Kärnthnertortheater in 1832. She sang in London in 1841, the same year she appeared at La Scala in Milan, where she created Donizetti’s Maria Padilla; also created Verdi’s Elvira in Emani (1844) and Odabella in Attila (1846) at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice. She retired from the stage in 1848.
