Kogoj, Marij
Kogoj, Marij, Slovenian composer; b. Trieste, May 27, 1895; d. Ljubljana, Feb. 25, 1956. He was a student of Schreker and Schoenberg in Vienna (1914–18); then was active as a conductor at the Ljubljana Opera and as a music critic. Although Kogoj’s promising career was thwarted in 1932 when he became mentally ill, he was one of the earliest Slovenian composers to experiment with expressionism, as evinced in his opera Örne maske (Black Masks; Ljubljana, May 7, 1929). Among his other works were choral pieces, chamber music, and piano pieces.
