Kiladze, Grigori

Kiladze, Grigori, Russian composer; b. Batum, Oct. 25, 1902; d. Tbilisi, April 3, 1962. He studied at the Tiflis Cons, with Ippolitov-Ivanov (1924–27), then at the Leningrad Cons, with Shcherbachev (1927–29). He was an active proponent of ethnic Georgian music in a modern idiom derived thematically from folk melo-rhythms. He wrote 2 operas on subjects from Caucasian revolutionary history: Bakhtrioni (1936) and Lado Ketz-khoveli (1941); Sinatle, ballet (1947); Poem about Stalin for Chorus and Orch. (1935); Heroic Symphony (1944); Childhood and Adolescence of the Leader, oratorio (1951); Triumph, overture (1957).
