Eight-year-old Masao (Sekiguchi) lives with his grandmother. His father is dead and his mother lives in a distant town due to her job. Bored on his summer vacation, the boy decides to visit his mother—accompanied by the tough-guy husband, Kikujiro (Kitano), of a neighbor.
