Khrennikov, Tikhon (Nikolayevich) (b Elets, 1913). Russ. composer. Held various official Soviet posts; as sec.-gen. of Union of Soviet Composers, denounced Prokofiev and Shostakovich for formalism in 1948, and a generation later Schnittke and Gubaidulina. Leader of Soviet Composers’ Union, for over 25 years. Teacher of comp., Moscow Cons. from 1963. Works incl. 5 operas; 3 syms.; vc. conc.; vn. conc.; 2 pf. concs.; songs; and film scores.
