Karpeles, Maud , English ethnomusicologist; b. London, Nov. 12, 1885; d. there, Oct. 1, 1976. She was educated in England and Germany. She was associated with Cecil Sharp in collecting and organizing English folk songs (from 1909). In 1914 she visited the U.S., where she assembled American songs of English origin. She founded the International Folk Music Council (1947), and ed. its journal (1949–63). She was made an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in 1961. With Sharp, she publ. the collections English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians (London, 1917; 3rd ed., 1960) and The Country Dance Book, V (London, 1918); her own collections included The Lancashire Morris Dance Tunes (London, 1930), Folk Songs from Newfoundland (London, 1934; 2nd ed., aug., 1971), and Cecil Sharp’s Collection of English Folk Songs (London, 1973). She also publ. Cecil Sharp (with A.H. Fox Strangways; London, 1932; 2nd ed., 1955; rev. ed., 1967, as Cecil Sharp: His Life and Work), Folk Songs of Europe (London, 1956), and An Introduction to English Folk Song (London, 1973).
