Hurwitz, Emanuel (Henry)
Hurwitz, Emanuel (Henry), English violinist and conductor; b. London, May 7, 1919. He received a scholarship from Bronislaw Huberman that allowed him to study at the Royal Academy of Music in London. In 1948 he became concertmaster of the Goldsborough (later English) Chamber Orch., a position he held until 1968. He was then concertmaster of the New Philharmonia Orch. (1969–71). He was also active as a chamber music artist; was 1st violinist of the Hurwitz String Quartet (1946–51), the Melos Ensemble (1956–72), and the Aeolian Quartet (from 1970). In 1968 he founded the Hurwitz Chamber Orch. (from 1972 known as the Serenata of London), a conductorless ensemble. He was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1978.
