Hansen, (Emil) Robert

Hansen, (Emil) Robert, Danish cellist, conductor, and composer; b. Copenhagen, Feb. 25, 1860; d. Ârhus, July 18, 1926. He received his first instruction from his father, then studied with F. Neruda at the Copenhagen Cons., and with Friedrich Grutzmacher in Dresden. He was a member of the Court Orch. in Copenhagen (1877–89). After a stay in London, he settled in 1891 in Leipzig, where he joined the Gewandhaus Orch. and became a prof. at the Cons. From 1918 he was conductor of the Ârhus Orch. His works include the opera Frauenlist (Sondershausen, 1911) and the operetta, Die wilde Komtesse (Eisenach, 1913), as well as Sym., Symphonic Suite for Strings and 2 Horns, Piano Concerto, Cello Concerto, Piano Quintet, and String Quartet.
