Halstead, Anthony (George)

Halstead, Anthony (George), versatile English horn player, harpsichordist, conductor, and teacher; b. Salford, Lancashire, June 18, 1945. He was a student of Sydney Coulston at the Royal Manchester Coll. of Music (1962–66), and then of Horace Fitzpatrick (1966, 1978), George Malcolm (1979), and Myron Bloom (1979–80). He played in the Bournemouth Sym. Orch. (1966), the BBC Scottish Sym. Orch. in Glasgow (1966–70), the London Sym. Orch. (1970–73), and the English Chamber Orch. in London (1972–86). In 1972 he became a prof, at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London. Halstead has won an international reputation as a virtuoso on the natural horn. He has appeared as a soloist and as a conductor with various early music ensembles, and has made many recordings. He has made many appearances and recordings with the Hanover Band.
