This ‘deconstructionist’ prod., set in mid-19th and late 20th cents. and cond. by Boulez, proved highly controversial. In 1979 Chéreau prod. the 3-act version of Lulu (in Cerha's edn. of the complete score) in Paris. Prod. Lucio Silla (La Scala, 1984); Wozzeck (Paris, 1992); and Don Giovanni (Salzburg Fest., 1994).
