Boschi, Giuseppe Maria

Boschi, Giuseppe Maria, Italian bass who flourished in the late 17th century and the first half of the 18th century. He married the contralto Francesca Vanini in 1698. After singing in Venice (1707; 1708-09), he went to London with his wife and made his first appearance there in Mancini’s Idaspe fedele on Nov. 19, 1710. On Feb. 24, 1711, he created the role of Argante in Handel’s Rinaldo. After singing again in Venice (1713–14), he appeared in Dresden (1717–20), after which he was called to London by Handel to serve as one of the principal members of his Royal Academy of Music opera productions (1720–28). He subsequently returned once more to Venice, where he sang in opera (1728–29) and later in the choir at San Marco.
