Adam, (Jean) Louis
Adam, (Jean) Louis, Alsatian pianist, teacher, and composer, father of Adolphe (Charles) Adam; b. Müttersholz, Dec. 3, 1758; d. Paris, April 8, 1848. He settled in Paris in 1775, where he was a prof. at the Cons. (1797–1842). His pupils included Kalkbrenner and Hérold. He wrote virtuoso piano pieces, of which his variations on Le Roi Dagobert were once popular. He also authored the manuals Méthode, ou Principe général du doigte pour le forte- piano and Méthode nouvelle pour le piano (1802; 5th ed., 1832).
