Acclaimed for research on sunspots and interferometry, served as lecturer in department of astrophysics at University of Oxford Observatory (1937–79); served as research fellow and senior research fellow at St. Hugh's College, Oxford (1957–80); worked at Mt. Stromlo Observatory in Australia (1963–64).
