Washington Square
Washington Square ★★★ 1997 (PG)
Adaptation of Henry James' novel, which was previously filmed as “The Heiress.” Set in 19th-century New York City (filmed in Baltimore), wealthy spinster Catherine Sloper (Leigh), against the will of her overbearing father (Finney), is pursued by a handsome fortune hunter (Chaplin). Director Holland tends to bluntly simplify James' complex undertones, and Leigh's facial ticks can't equal “The Heiress”‘ Olivia de Havilland's painful plainness; nonetheless, definitely worth seeing. 115m/C VHS, DVD . Jennifer Jason Leigh, Ben Chaplin, Albert Finney, Maggie Smith, Judith Ivey, Betsy Brantley, Jennifer Garner, Peter Maloney, Robert Stanton, Scott Jaeck; D: Agnieszka Holland; W: Carol Doyle; C: Jerzy Zielinski; M: Jan A.P. Kaczmarek.
