My Blueberry Nights ★★ 2007 (PG-13)

Director Wong Kar Wai's first English-language feature sets up as a bit of a road movie. New Yorker Elizabeth (crooner Jones), in the wake of an ugly breakup, happens into a Manhattan cafe where she orders a piece of blueberry pie and meets waiter/cook Jeremy (Law). Elizabeth is headed out of town to get over her painful split but promises to stay in touch with her new pal. While on the road, she works various jobs and encounters other wandering souls, including an alcoholic cop (Strathairn) and his gorgeous ex-wife (Weisz) in Memphis, and a hard-luck card shark (Portman) in Las Vegas who cons her out of her savings. Finally she heads back to New York, perhaps hungry for another slice of blueberry pie. Don't look for any real plot here—Wong has just artfully strung together a series of vignettes, which works if that's your thing. 90m/C DVD . FR HK Jude Law, David Strathairn, Rachel Weisz, Natalie Portman, Norah Jones, Chan Marshall; D: Wong Kar-Wai; W: Larry Block, Wong Kar-Wai; C: Darius Khondji; M: Ry Cooder.
