Pasolini's second film is a heartbreaking story of family ties, escaping the past, and dreams of the future. The title character (Magnani) is a former prostitute who attempts respectability for herself and her teenaged son (Garofolo). But her expimp (Citti) threatens her new life and Rome's bigcity temptations prove to be a pathway to crime and tragedy for the boy. Magnani gives one of her finest performances.
