20,000 Leagues Under the Sea ★½ 1997
Silly TV version of the ofttold Verne tale finds marine biologist Aronnax (Crenna) and his assistant/ daughter Sophie (Cox) prisoners on Captain Nemo's (Cross) submarine. In the original Verne version, Sophie was a young man—the sex change now means there's lots of boring eyebatting between Sophie, harpoonist Ned Land (Gross), and the jealous Nemo. The underwater photography is nifty but the fish also provide more excitement than the cast. 91m/C VHS, DVD . Ben Cross, Richard Crenna, Paul Gross, Julie Cox, Michael Jayston; D: Michael Anderson Sr.; W: Joe Wiesenfeld; C: Alan Hume; M: John Scott. TV
