Morgenstern, Lina B. (1830–1909)

German social reformer. Born Lina Bauer in 1830; died in 1909; married a Dr. Morgenstern.

At age 18, Lina B. Morgenstern organized a league to aid poor school children. After her marriage, she founded the Berlin Kindergarten Association and served as its president from 1860 to 1866. The Public Kitchens she established in Berlin to relieve economic distress were imitated in other large cities and constitute her most notable accomplishment. Morgenstern also founded a society for the protection of illegitimate children, and an academy for the instruction of young women in practical arts, and was the author of a number of books on domestic and educational subjects.
