A Republican, was lieutenant governor of Massachusetts; became acting governor (April 2001), with the resignation of Governor Paul Cellucci; as the 1st woman to be governor of MA, was also the 1st governor to give birth while in office (May 15, 2001), with the arrival of twins; in the face of poor poll ratings and a tough primary challenge from Republican Mitt Romney, dropped out of the race for governor (2002).
