The 1st black woman to win an Emmy for Best Actress in a Comedy series, co-starred as Weezie on "The Jeffersons" (1975–85); began career with the American Negro Theater in Harlem, making stage debut in On Strivers Row (1946); appeared on Broadway in The Amen Corner and made film debut in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner (1967).
