Sanfuentes Andonaegui, Juan Luis (1858–1930)

Juan Luis Sanfuentes Andonaegui (b. 27 December 1858; d. 1930), president of Chile (1915–1920). The younger brother of Enrique Sanfuentes (whom President José Manuel Balmaceda Fernández had tapped as his successor in 1891), Juan Luis Sanfuentes was a supporter of Balmaceda in the civil war of 1891 and later led the Liberal Democratic Party, which nominally espoused Balmaceda's principles. Sanfuentes held several ministerial posts and was a prominent figure during the "parliamentary republic" period in Chile. His main achievement was to uphold Chile's neutrality in World War I. His administration marked the end of the oligarchic era in Chilean politics.
