Served as assistant lecturer in Biochemistry department at Royal Free Hospital Medical School (1948–51), then lecturer (1952–61), senior lecturer (1961–69), reader (1970–72) and biochemistry professor (1972–83); became the 1st married mistress of Girton College, Cambridge (1976).
