Ponselle, Carmela (1892–1977)
American mezzo-soprano. Born Carmela Ponzillo, June 7, 1892, in Schenectady, NY; died in 1977; sister of Rosa Ponselle (1897–1981, singer).
Made debut as Amneris in Aïda at Metropolitan Opera (1925); other principle roles included that of Aldalgisa in Norma and Laura in La Gioconda; also concertized throughout US and was often heard on radio.
