Ponta, Adamus de

Ponta, Adamus de , South Netherlands composer who flourished in the second half of the 16th century. He was a singer in the Vienna Hofkapelle in 1563–64. He then settled in Liège, where he was succentor at St. Jean l’Evangéliste and rector of the altar of St. Ambroise (1567–69). From 1570 he was succentor and beneficiary of the altar of St. Denis. In 1576 he was elected canon of St. Materne in the Cathedral, but in 1577 he was replaced as canon and succentor. He subsequently was active at St. Jean l’Evangéliste, becoming succentor there in 1582. Ponta was an admirable composer of motets.
