Mofford, Rose (1922–)

American politician. Born Rose Perica, June 10, 1922, in Globe, Arizona; dau. of John and Frances Perica; m. T.R. "Lefty" Mofford (founder of the Phoenix Police Dept.), 1957.

Served as secretary of state (1977–87); became 1st woman governor of Arizona on the heels of impeachment of Governor Evan Mecham (1987); serving until 1991, rescinded controversial appointments by her predecessor and provided much-needed stability; did not run for reelection.
