Lin, Maya (1959–)

Chinese-American sculptor and architect. Born Oct 5, 1959, in Athens, Ohio; Henry Huan Lin (ceramist and dean of fine arts at Ohio University) and Julia Chang (poet and professor of literature at Ohio University (both were immigrants); Yale University, School of Architecture, BA, 1981, MA, 1986; m. Daniel Wolf; children: 2.

While a senior at Yale (1980), won the design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to be built in Washington DC; oversaw construction of the then highly controversial monument (1982), which, over the years, has become revered; also designed the Civil Rights Memorial at the Southern Poverty Law Center in Montgomery, Alabama (1989), Groundswell at Ohio State University (1993) and The Wave Field at University of Michigan (1993–94).
