Born Irene Rothschild in New York City on December 16, 1868; died in New York City on November 25, 1954; daughter of Henry Rothschild (a merchant and broker); married Solomon R. Guggenheim (1861–1949), in 1895; sister-in-law of Olga H. and Florence S. Guggenheim ; children: Eleanor May Guggenheim (b. 1896, who married Arthur Stuart, earl of Castle Stewart); Gertrude R. Guggenheim (1898–1966); Barbara Josephine Guggenheim (1904, who married John R. Lawson-Johnston, Fred E. Wettach, Jr., and Henry Obre).
