Guglielmi, Pietro Carlo

Guglielmi, Pietro Carlo, Italian composer, son of Pietro Alessandro Guglielmi; b. Rome or Naples, c. 1763; d. probably in Naples, Feb. 21, 1817. He studied voice, keyboard playing, and composition at the Cons. Santa Maria di Loreto in Naples. By 1794 he was in Madrid, where he brought out his first operas. In 1795 he returned to Italy and brought out operas for various cities. In 1809 he went to London as an opera composer. After returning to Naples in 1811, he served as maestro di cappella to the Archduchess Beatrice at Massa di Carrara from about 1813. He wrote over 40 dramatic scores, mainly comic operas, several of which were popular in their day. He also composed an oratorio, La distruzione di Gerusalemme (Naples, 1803).
