Delaye, Marguerite (fl. 1569)

French war hero. Flourished around 1569 in Montelimar, France.

The only records of Marguerite Delaye show that she was living in Montelimar, France, in 1569. It was a time when France was racked by civil wars, with Catholics led by Henry I, 3rd duke of Guise, and Huguenots led by the followers of Louis I, prince de Condé. In that year, the town was put under siege by the troops of Huguenot leader Admiral Gaspard de Coligny. Delaye was one of the brave defenders of Montelimar, eventually losing one arm during a battle. The town erected a one-armed statue of Delaye in her memory.
