Briggs, Margaret Jane (1892–1961)
New Zealand equestrian. Born April 17, 1892, near Manaia in South Taranaki, New Zealand; died Nov 5, 1961, in Palmerston, New Zealand; dau. of Robert Ephraim Briggs (laborer) and Lydia Elsie (Stevens) Briggs.
Began successful show jumping career at 10; moved to Australia (1922), where she won numerous exhibition prizes and became skilled in wire jumping, bareback jumping, and high jumping; invited to Los Angeles, California (1925), where she gained prominence in rodeo riding and exhibition jumping; returned to New Zealand (1948).
